Philip Wylie: No reduction in power, just a noticeable difference between the new Mux BBCA at 200kw, the un-switched standard definition muxes at 20kW and the current low power HD mux at 10kW. You should see a considerable improvement from 18th April 2012, when all muxes are planned to be transmitting at 200kW.

I live 2 miles from Crystal Palace. BBC 1 and BBC2 were the stations I could always reply on Freeview without arduous fiddling and BBC3 and BBC4 were almost as good, but since the 4th of April they have all been completely unavailable (and I don't understand why) and retuning/resetting just loses other fragile channels. While most BBC output can be watched live films can't. Will the promises about better TV reception be like those made about CDs? This seems to be reminiscent of the Olympic ticket fiasco. Someone sensible might have considered augmenting the Freeview signal when removing the terrestrial signal. It would have also been sensible not to make people lose reception just before a series of English Bank Holidays.

NB.In your circumstance you most certainly have excess signal being only 2 miles from Crystal Palace itself.Either use a set-top box or fit an attenuator. If possible try manual scan frequency 23 it should work hopefully.

Has anybody else lost their digibox guide list for BBC2 since the 4/4 switchover? Still getting the signal ok, just no info so can only programme manually on that channel; nuisance...

Regarding excess signal to my home here in E Croydon; I tried it with the aerial switched off and hence just acting as a passive receiver, the quality on 34 went up a little but that on 23 and 22 went right down...in any case the balance seems just about ok now, a little boiling here and there but nothing to ruin any programme.

Maybe it's best to just sit through the problems with gritted teeth between now and 18/4, and if there are any problems after that then start looking long and hard for solutions...

Martyn Smith: Well I suppose its somewhat easier to cope with excessively high signal levels so long as all the multiplexes involved are at about the same levels as each other rather than the frequently experienced problem of reception in some areas where they are not, the balancing act you refer to being the order of the day.

That said though, this type of situation is mostly experienced before final DSO when some commercials are at ludicrously low levels compared to the main PSB muxes, such as applies with the situation at Sudbury.
