Are you sure he is actually receiving a 1080p transmission? Or has he just set the output of his receiver to 1080p. I'm not sure that anyone transmits 1080p yet.
I stand to be corrected. (54.90831,-7.67339)

Hi,
Well I think there are 1080p transmissions for these reasons.

1) I tried the same i-c an HD box in London (Crystal Place Transmitter) on a Sony Bravia, it reported 1080P. The Sony set also has its own HD tuner which reports 1080P.
2) Tried the same box at neighbours in Ringsend on different Sony Bravia it also reported 1080P. This set also has its own HD tuner and it reports 1080P.
My Sharp Aquos plays Blurays in 1080P via HDMI but the i-Can HD box can only sustain 1080i on this TV.The i-Can has a setting to change the output and when I set it to1080P it cannot sustain the picture and sound. It will come on for a few seconds reporting 1080P and then the screen will go blank for a further few seconds. If the two Sony's are falsely reporting 1080P then that solves the issue. However if the broadcast is in 1080P then I wonder why I can't get it? Is it the aerial?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

up ntil now (still got them) ive two aeriels, one receving limavady signal for BBC's itv's etc, and one pointing to derry for RTE's.
digital is goood for BBC's etc but RTE's are unreliable.
two questions . 1. can i receive RTE's from limavady without derry aeriel.
2. if not how can i make rtes more reliable.

Regards
Michael

michael: I imagine that your RT aerial pointing in the general direction of Derry is directed at Holywell Hill, Co Donegal. Ensure that your receiver is tuned to it and not another RT transmitter; bring up the signal strength screen and ensure that it is tuned to UHF channel 30.

Limavady doesn't broadcast RT. This is because it was considered that across its service area there is sufficient overspill from the Republic's transmitters.

Whereabouts are you?

If Moville and Limavady are on roughly the same bearing, then you may get away with a single aerial directed somewhere between the two.

BTW, Moville broadcasts on C45, so if that is what you are tuned to, then that's where it's coming from.

Hi all I have just retuned my mums in Coleraine, picking up all Freeview Channels from Limavady and all RTE from Moville. It is a LG32LD450 TV that comes with built in Freeview capable of transmitting MPEG4/DVB-T2 Signal. Coming of one Aerial set up to right direction by myself. Can be achieved by competent Aerial Installer. If TV doesnt have built in MPEG4 decoder buy a Freeview HD Box and Connect to receive RTE.

Ger: If you're receiving both with the same aerial, then one or both transmitters must be a bit off-beam and that would seem to be the most likely possibility.

Holywell Hill is on C30, so I guess you might (or really probably should have) a wideband aerial.

The gain of wideband yagi aerials drops off on lower channels and are therefore less directional (than higher ones). See this page for come examples that illustrate my point about gain:

Gain (curves), Again

Therefore, the answer might be to have the aerial pointing at Limavady (or much closer to it than to Holywell Hill). Failing that, a separate aerial with the two combined using a diplexer.

---

Clonmany transmitter broadcasts vertically at 20W on C49; not sure whether this might be a possible cause.

There appears to be no other transmitter on C59 that might be an issue.

Ger: Another thought: Amplifiers used to boost low-level signals are best at the aerial end as having them before the receiver amplifies the noise picked up in the cable as well as amplifying what is left of the signal (it having been reduced due to its travel along the cable).
